If you aren’t Asian, you may not know what this is.
A surprising amount of jackfruit sprouted at the CCAG! Although the Jackfruit is native to Southeast Asia, where it is tropical, we decided to plant about 30 seeds that were harvested from half of a jackfruit. They were planted earlier this month. Out of those seeds, 12 sprouted.
The jackfruit is the biggest fruit in the world; the trees grow to 100 feet tall and the fruit itself can grow to 2 feet in length! The skin of the fruit is green-yellow, with numerous spiky ridges. The trees require a lot of moisture to grow, and that's why they grow in tropical climates. Most jackfruit is grown in Southeast Asia, but many farmers attempted to grow it in Mexico and Los angeles. The ripe Jackfruit tastes like a cross between a mango and a pineapple, but it can be eaten as an unripe fruit. Small unripe fruits are supposed to have little flavor and have the same texture as meat. Jackfruits are actually not related to durians; they are more close to figs and mulberries.
What will we do with the sprouts? Planting the seeds directly in soil is not a good idea because the soil is always dry, and it takes a lot of water for it to soak down. Also, rats and other rodents will probably eat the sprout, but if the tree grows really big, its roots may tear apart underground pipes. We will plant them in pots, and keep on repotting them as they age.
In addition, it's highly unlikely that it will produce a fruit, but it is still great to have grown a jack fruit.
